Running it, start to finish

  1. Bring real research, not just the team's beliefs.
  2. Check the evidenced-to-assumed ratio before acting on it.
  3. Test the three cheapest assumptions before building.

What you get back

The output this produces, every time.

  • Marks every item as evidenced or assumed, which is the difference between research and confident guessing.
  • Includes emotional and social jobs, which are frequently the real driver and usually omitted.
  • Compares against what they do today rather than against nothing.

Getting better results

Where this usually goes wrong, and how to avoid it.

  • Read the ratio in section 4. If most of the canvas is assumption, label it a hypothesis before anyone plans a roadmap from it.
  • Look hardest at unexpected gains. Required and expected gains are table stakes. Differentiation lives almost entirely in the third category.
  • Be honest about partial fit. A product does not relieve every pain, and claiming it does produces messaging the product cannot support.
