Running it, start to finish
- Look at last quarter's pattern before planning this one.
- Cut to three outcomes and name what you dropped.
- Set a weekly leading indicator for each and review on the same day each week.
What you get back
The output this produces, every time.
- Caps you at three outcomes and names which goals did not make it.
- Requires a weekly leading indicator, without which failure is discovered in week eleven.
- Forces you to name what you are giving up, since additive plans fail on capacity.
Getting better results
Where this usually goes wrong, and how to avoid it.
- Deal with the perennials. Something carried for three quarters is telling you it is either not important or wrongly scoped. Both are decisions.
- Make the indicators leading. 'Revenue' is lagging and unactionable weekly. 'Conversations started' is leading and tells you something on a Friday.
- Allow the mid-quarter drop. Dropping one outcome to protect two is a good decision. Planning for it in advance makes it possible to take.
