Running it, start to finish

  1. Gather what the guest has said in existing interviews and writing.
  2. Send themes rather than questions in advance.
  3. Keep the must-ask list visible while recording.

What you get back

The output this produces, every time.

  • Lists the questions the guest has already answered many times, so you avoid the rehearsed version.
  • Identifies where the interviewing has been thin, which is where new material is.
  • Distinguishes where pushing is productive from where it crosses your stated line.

Getting better results

Where this usually goes wrong, and how to avoid it.

  • Do the research input properly. Section 1 and section 5 depend entirely on knowing what the guest has already said. Without it you get a generic question list.
  • Send themes, not questions. Section 8 matters. Exact questions produce rehearsed answers; themes produce a guest who has thought about the area.
  • Believe section 5 if it says no. If your research does not support a distinctive question, the episode will be a repeat of ones the audience has heard.
