- Never join separate statements. Presenting two things said minutes apart as one quote is the most serious quotation fault and is indefensible against a transcript.
- Keep their sentence structure. Smoothing speech into uniform prose removes the person, which is the only reason to publish an interview rather than an article.
- Agree the record in advance. What is on and off the record, and whether they see quotes, should be settled before the interview rather than after the draft.
